GNC Live Well 250 The Milwaukee Mile

Day1- Tech

This was a total 360 from Dover. We went through Tech with only a few small problems. One was that one of the Roof Rails was over to far we needed to move it in about ¼" .(see photo) The Roof Rail is a small thin strip that deflects air on the roof of the car. One of the other problems was the steering Wheel needed a Shut off button for both A/B Ignition Box. This was a safety feature. We got our practice tires and we brought our qualifying tires to impound, we had a mix up getting our qualifiers from Goodyear which almost made us late for getting the qualifiers to impound. This is a bad thing. Don't be late for scheduled NASCAR Times!

(For those who don't understand. When you go to the race you are required to purchase 2 new sets of tires. One set for Practice, another for qualifying. You have to have your qualifying tires into an area that NASCAR flags off which is the" impound" for Qualifiers. A Nascar Official puts a sticker on the tire. When the race starts you don't have to use new tires, we have a limited budget and it is hard without sponsorship to buy the amount of tires we need. Tires run $1400 a set. So we use our qualifiers to start with and our practice tires to back it up. You can purchase tires during the race.)

Day 2- Practice

How sweet it is… Billy got out for practice and the car was handling great. He said that he was in the car screaming whoopee, like a kid in a candy store. His times were not the greatest but that was because we don't have a back up car and a few cars have had wrecks in practice. We need to keep safety in mind with the limited budget we are running with at the track. When the car came in the team did some inspection and found that the car had dropped. We made some adjustments but ran out of time to practice on the new setup before qualifying. Bill felt real good about qualifying, but when he got out on the track for qualifying the new setup did not play in his favor the car didn't handle as well as it did in practice and our time for qualifying was not very good. Now we wait it out. Here is the scenario. There were 4 teams behind us in points. Each of these teams had high budgets. If all these teams qualify in the top 36 we would be sent home, if one of them don't then we would use our provisional and one of the four teams would be sent home. This was a pretty intense hour. We had to just sit back and watch. Well as you probably already know, we got in the race. 2 of the teams lower than us in points didn't qualify in 36th and this gave us the provisional. I have no more finger nails left.

After Quilifying we bought a new set of springs, changed the camber tolernance and Bill went out for Happy hour. He said the car was back and felt better than before. As I said before non-stop action and we haven't even started the race yet.

Day 3- Race Day

Could some one please turn the oven off? There were reports that the track was 114 Degrees on race day. That's Hot. We were ready. Off to final tech, no problems, and out to the track. We set the car up on the track, that was pretty cool.
The race began and Bill looked good he was keeping pace with the lead lap and moving up in position, we were all getting really excited. Then around lap 17 he pulled into pit row. We were having trouble with Bill's helmet radio, he could hear johnny who was spotting but we couldn't hear Bill, not a good thing. Anyway Bill pulls in to the pit and he is yelling out to Jeff that something was wrong, we could not tell what he was saying so Jeff did a quick inspection of the tires and nothing appeared noticeable from a quick inspection. Bill pulled back out and ran about 2 more laps and had to pull the car in, he went straight to the garage area. The garage area was about a ¼ mile from our pit. He was also penalized 2 Laps for speeding on pit row. I ran down to the garage area to see what was wrong. He said " the car was bouncing around the track but we are fixing it and going back out". We thought we may have broke a shock but what had happened is the chain that attaches from the body to the rear, this helps pull the back tires up for changing tires, had bound up. We got under and fixed the chain. By the time all this had taken place we had lost about 30 laps, Im not sure of the exact numbers. Bill got back out on the track and after a lap to clean the tires got back up to speed.

He ran about 50 more laps on the original tires before pulling in to pit, we changed right side tires and added fuel. He was going to go back out and come in again for a left side tires but after about 10 laps he had engine problems, lost a cylinder. We went with a strong gear to get out of the turns well but the rev limiter was hitting 86rpm at the end of the straight away. The Rev Limiter will shut the engine down at 86rpms. Bill said that he was hitting the Rev limiter from the start of the race.
We finished 36th after starting 42nd we completed 81 laps and for the budget this team has I feel this was a very good showing. Wait till we have some sponsors.
